So What Position is for Me?

Youth City Mayor: This person should be a senior in high school, and preference will be given to those who have participated in previous years. The office of Youth Mayor will take more time than other positions, but will be a valuable leadership experience. The Mayor is responsible for all activities of the council, including conducting all meetings, preparing agendas, delegating responsibilities, checking on progress (you will need to call each committee chair prior to each meeting to see if they have anything that needs to go on the agenda), and addressing membership concerns. They will need to focus on the purpose of the Youth Council, which is to help build a better community, and instill in the other members a desire to reach that end.

Youth City Mayor Pro-Tem: This person should be a Junior in high school. He or she will help the mayor in preparation to become the mayor in 2007-2008.

Youth City Manager: This person will be the Mayor's second-hand man. Together they will manage and be responsible for the Youth Council. They should work closely and should the Mayor ever be unable to fulfill his or her duties temporarily, it will be the City Manager's responsibility to fill in.

Council Members: Each council member has specific assignments to ensure that the council runs smoothly, and that all the work is not placed in anyone's hands. It is their responsibility to work with their committee as much as possible to get the job done. Some Council activities cross over more than one committee's domain, in which times it will be the responsibility for Council Members to work together. Everyone will help out on every activity whenever possible, but this way the planning and specifics are delegated out and taken care of more effectively.

Activities Committee: Oversees the planning and carrying out social activities in conjunction with other council and committee members.

Service Committee: Responsible for planning and carrying out service activities in conjunction with other council and committee members. This committee could collaborate with other community organizations.

Fundraising Committee: Responsible for managing and keeping records of the fundraising endeavors each year, including scheduling people to man the concessions stand in the spring. People on this committee will need o come up with creative and effective ways to keep the council running financially.

Publicity Committee: Responsible for announcing and advertising activities in local newspapers, schools, businesses, religious organizations, etc... Publicity people may be making lots of posters and flyers and need to be on top of things to ensure that the word gets out to the right people at the right times so the community can get involved.

Communications Committee: Responsible for public relations associated with the council. It is their job to let the public know about the council, and to create ties with the community. They should write articles for the NSL City Newsletter and other local newspapers to let the public know what the council has been up to. It would also be their responsibility to write thank-you letters to guest speakers and or supporters of the Youth Council activities. This position will also be in charge of keeping the youth council website updated.

Treasurer: This person is responsible for keeping track of revenues and expenditures, balancing the checking account, making deposits and giving financial reports, upon request.

Recorder:This person is responsible for taking and preparing minutes of meetings, keeping track of attendance, maintaining an accurate roster of members, and acting as repository of records, histories, libraries and inventories that belong to the Youth Council. This person could work with the communications committee to record council activities for use in future years.

Committee Members: Responsibilities will be given based on assignment and interest. They are expected to attend all meetings and activities on a regular basis and support the council in their appointed areas.
