2008 Easter Egg Dash a Success!

With somewhere around 7000 eggs, I think the Dash was a huge success this year. Thank you to all who participated and supported the great youth in our city. Don't miss next year's dash, We're hoping to have 10,000 eggs, and a larger area to spread out!

The Youth Council recently returned from the annual Leadership Institute at Utah State. We took 2nd place in the Youth Council Challenge.

Our Youth Council may not be the biggest in the state, but our youth are extraordinary!

Easter Egg Dash

The North Salt Lake Easter Egg Dash is this saturday (March 22nd) at 10am at Hatch Park.

The Dash is for all children ages 2-12.

Bring a basket and don't be late, once the siren goes off, it's only a matter of minutes until the fields are picked clean.

A Time For Giving

During this time of giving, The NSL Youth Council would like to help those who have so little. We will be holding a drive to gather blankets, hats, coats, bath towels, and gloves for The Road Home. In some areas, we'll be going door to door. If we don't make it to your neighborhood, please drop off whatever you can at the NSL City Building. We will be collecting items until Thursday December 20th.

After two years of carrying the prized Golden Buffalo, South Weber's Youth Council had to pass it along to the new Davis County Youth Council Summer Games Champions.

We'd like to thank the South Weber, Sunset, and Clinton Youth Councils for participating in this years Games. Next year will be hosted by Clinton.

Our final Movie in the Park Back to the Future was also a big success. Thank you to all who attended, and also to our great youth council for organizing the event. We are already looking forward to next summers movies.

We just returned from our Leadership Conference at USU, where our Youth Council took 11th place (out of 37) in the council challenge. Pretty amazing for such a small group!

April 7th is our annual Easter Egg Dash. It will be at Hatch Park and will start at 10am. Don't be late, once the dash starts, it doesn't last long, so make sure all children ages 2-12 are ready with their baskets in hand, so they don't miss the fun.

Activity Update!

We will be meeting on Friday, November 3rd at 4pm to finish stapling the food drive information onto bags, then we'll take the bags around to different areas of the city. This is for our annual food drive to benefit the Bountiful Food Pantry. Last year we raised 641 pounds of food, and we hope to increase that this year. We will pick up the bags after our regular meeting on Monday, November 6th (4pm).

The Youth Council is planning on helping out at a trunk-or-treat at Woods Cross High School on October 26th from 4-6 pm. An email will be sent to all youth council members with more information in the next week or so.

We're getting ready to place an order for shirts, and are doing a papa murphy's coupon card fundraiser. It's never to early to start PRE-SELLING. :)

In December we'll do our annual sub for santa shopping.

January will be time for local officials day and also time to start planning the Easter Egg Hunt (which will be even better than last year!!!)

Upcoming Activities

Tomorrow (that's Saturday the 19th of August) is our annual Movie in the Park. It starts as dusk, which I'm guessing will be around ten or so, but if it starts getting dark, come earlier.

We're showing Madagascar, so bring your families. It's free, but the youth council will be selling concessions, so we hope you'll support us there.

The youth council is touring the rec center next tuesday (the 22nd). All youth interested should meet at the city building at 5pm. We'll be staying for the city council meeting afterward to give the youth a chance to shadow our city counterparts.

As soon as our new Youth Mayor is announced, we'll be assigning other positions (that could be as soon as today) so if you haven't turned in an application, please do so asap so that you can get the position you want.

Our next meeting is Monday, August 21st at 4pm.

4th of July Activities

The July 3rd festivities at Eaglewood Golf Course went well. The Youth Council had a balloon dart game, which raised over $100 to support other youth council activities, and a dunking booth. All the money from the dunking booth was donated to the American Cancer Society. The Youth Council (and those who volunteered to be dunked) raised a little over $200. Thank you to everyone who participated!

On July 4th, the Youth Council rode in the Centerville Parade! It was a lot of fun (who doesn't like throwing candy to children), thanks to everyone who came to that!

It looks like our next activity will be a fundraiser to earn money for our shirts next year, and after that is our Movie in the Park on August 19th.

Youth City Council 2006-2007

We are now taking applications for the 2006-2007 Youth Council.

For the positions available, please see Council Positions.

Applications may be downloaded from this website (see Links) or picked up at the NSL City building. Interviews for Mayor and Mayor Pro-Tem will be in early August. Applications are also available by contacting Alice.

All youth who will be in 9th through the 12 grade are eligible to join youth council, and may begin attending meetings at any time. We meet at the city building on the 1st and 3rd Monday of each month at 4:00.

So What Position is for Me?

Youth City Mayor: This person should be a senior in high school, and preference will be given to those who have participated in previous years. The office of Youth Mayor will take more time than other positions, but will be a valuable leadership experience. The Mayor is responsible for all activities of the council, including conducting all meetings, preparing agendas, delegating responsibilities, checking on progress (you will need to call each committee chair prior to each meeting to see if they have anything that needs to go on the agenda), and addressing membership concerns. They will need to focus on the purpose of the Youth Council, which is to help build a better community, and instill in the other members a desire to reach that end.

Youth City Mayor Pro-Tem: This person should be a Junior in high school. He or she will help the mayor in preparation to become the mayor in 2007-2008.

Youth City Manager: This person will be the Mayor's second-hand man. Together they will manage and be responsible for the Youth Council. They should work closely and should the Mayor ever be unable to fulfill his or her duties temporarily, it will be the City Manager's responsibility to fill in.

Council Members: Each council member has specific assignments to ensure that the council runs smoothly, and that all the work is not placed in anyone's hands. It is their responsibility to work with their committee as much as possible to get the job done. Some Council activities cross over more than one committee's domain, in which times it will be the responsibility for Council Members to work together. Everyone will help out on every activity whenever possible, but this way the planning and specifics are delegated out and taken care of more effectively.

Activities Committee: Oversees the planning and carrying out social activities in conjunction with other council and committee members.

Service Committee: Responsible for planning and carrying out service activities in conjunction with other council and committee members. This committee could collaborate with other community organizations.

Fundraising Committee: Responsible for managing and keeping records of the fundraising endeavors each year, including scheduling people to man the concessions stand in the spring. People on this committee will need o come up with creative and effective ways to keep the council running financially.

Publicity Committee: Responsible for announcing and advertising activities in local newspapers, schools, businesses, religious organizations, etc... Publicity people may be making lots of posters and flyers and need to be on top of things to ensure that the word gets out to the right people at the right times so the community can get involved.

Communications Committee: Responsible for public relations associated with the council. It is their job to let the public know about the council, and to create ties with the community. They should write articles for the NSL City Newsletter and other local newspapers to let the public know what the council has been up to. It would also be their responsibility to write thank-you letters to guest speakers and or supporters of the Youth Council activities. This position will also be in charge of keeping the youth council website updated.

Treasurer: This person is responsible for keeping track of revenues and expenditures, balancing the checking account, making deposits and giving financial reports, upon request.

Recorder:This person is responsible for taking and preparing minutes of meetings, keeping track of attendance, maintaining an accurate roster of members, and acting as repository of records, histories, libraries and inventories that belong to the Youth Council. This person could work with the communications committee to record council activities for use in future years.

Committee Members: Responsibilities will be given based on assignment and interest. They are expected to attend all meetings and activities on a regular basis and support the council in their appointed areas.

Raising Money for the Relay for Life

Everyone recognize how wonderful Shane is! He was the ONLY one who brought his Luminaria's to me yesterday. He sold quite a few, and along with other donations he gathered, he raised $92 plus change! That is incredible!

The Purpose of Youth Councils

PURPOSE OF YOUTH CITY COUNCILS

The Youth City Council program was originally started as part of Utah Community Progress (UCP) and was sponsored by Utah State University Extension Service, Utah League of Cities and Towns, and the Utah Department of Community and Economic Development. The first Youth City Council in Utah was organized in Hyrum City. Then Hyrum Mayor Bruce Darley and Utah State University Community Development Specialists Wes Maughan and Jeri Winger were instrumental in starting this first youth city council. The number of cities participating with YCC's grew to the point that an Association of Youth Councils was formed in 1992. This non-profit association provides continued leadership for Youth City Councils throughout Utah. According to their mission statement they are "to provide opportunity for youth to develop mature citizenship, leadership, a sense of personal achievement and an understanding of government."

Local Youth City Councils (YCCs) are designed to involve youth in solving community problems. Elected or appointed youth leaders assume responsible roles in developing communication among community groups and with other young people in the community. Young people learn to identify their needs, to organize activities and service for themselves, and to participate with their adult counterparts in city programs. Through this process they:

● Become more aware of community leaders and their concerns,
● Identify community opportunities and problems that involve youth,
● Set priorities for action,
● Examine alternatives for best solutions,
● Assist the City Council in action programs and
● Become more involved in the democratic process.

Some communities have seen their Youth City Councils take the lead in providing senior citizen holiday dinners and youth dances, developing park property, initiating successful drug abuse prevention programs, conducting anti- vandalism campaigns, voter awareness activities, community celebrations, and more. All this is achieved through a cooperative effort between elected city officials, support from the Association of Youth Councils, advice from Utah State University Extension Community Development faculty, and the youth themselves.
